Maunga Series

These are a series of small paintings on board made in 2019.

I live in a city that is home to 53 extinct volcanoes, formed by eruptions beginning around 193,000 years ago and the most recent only 600 years ago. I walk around my favourite Maunga (mountain) most days as it is currently used as a park and farm. In the past it has been the home and fortress of a number of Māori tribes, one of whom was responsible, in the 17th century, for terracing the site. I find the land formations fascinating and like to reflect that in my paintings

Maunga fill me with a sense of awe, bringing me into the present moment and an awareness of my place in nature.
